Staring at a blank page is the hardest part of writing an essay. An outline breaks the task into manageable pieces. Instead of writing 2,000 words, you are filling in 5-7 sections with 200-400 words each. Much less intimidating.

Essay Types and Their Structures

ResearchIntro → Literature review → Methodology → Findings → Discussion → ConclusionCitations, data, analysis

The 5-Minute Outline Method

  1. Write your thesis in one sentence. If you cannot, your argument is not clear enough yet.
  2. List 3 supporting points. Each becomes a body paragraph.
  3. For each point, note one piece of evidence. A statistic, quote, or example.
  4. Write a one-sentence conclusion. Restate thesis differently.
  5. Add transitions. "Furthermore," "However," "In contrast," between sections.
